Takapuna sits on a narrow isthmus on Auckland's North Shore, between Shoal Bay — an arm of the Waitematā Harbour — and the open Hauraki Gulf.

Its east-facing beach runs about a kilometre of fine sand and looks out across the gulf to the volcanic cone of Rangitoto Island; the gentle water makes it a popular swimming spot.
